Year 5

In Summer 1, our topic will be Changing Landscapes. We will be weaving this throughout our curriculum with a focus on local area history, architecture and the work of leading naturalists to protect different landscapes and the animals who live there.

In English, we will be reading The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, an adventure story set on the island of Sri Lanka. Alongside this, we will be learning about the lives and work of David Attenborough and Jane Goodall.

In Humanities we will be looking at how Lesnes Abbey has changed over time.

Our learning in Science focuses on properties of materials, particularly changes of state. There will be lots of practical activities—please check the blog regularly to see what we have been doing.

In Maths, our main topic will be fractions. Children will be set work on Mathletics, our online learning platform, that corresponds to this.

In Computing we will be using Scratch to create our own games. Why not give it a try at home with your child? It is free to sign up and there are lots of tutorials available online.

In RE we will be looking at how Buddhists follow the example of Buddha.

If you have any further questions about the content of the Year 5 curriculum please contact the Year 5 Team Leader, Ms Chapman, who will be more than happy to answer any questions.
