Year 3

During this half term, we will be learning about Myths and Legends with a focus on Ancient Greece. We will listen to stories based on Greek gods and goddesses and find out where Greece is located in the world.

In English we will read the story of ‘Perseus and Medusa’ and use role play and story mapping to deepen our understanding of the text. We will learn how to describe a character using appropriate vocabulary and learn about how to write an instructional text. We will use our instructional writing toolkit to create a set of instructions for ‘how to defeat a monster’.

In Maths, we will continue to learn the 3 times-tables as well as practise the 6 times tables. We will recap place value and understanding of the value of digits within a 3-digit number. We will be introducing measure (length and mass) We will also learn about the inverse and the relationship between numbers in a number sentence and further our knowledge of multiplication and division. 

In Science we will focus on light and shadows, finding out about how light travels and find out how rainbows are formed and create our own using mirrors in water. We will make a sundial and explore how shadows change throughout the day and investigate objects that reflect and block the light.

In History we will use historical artefacts and sources to explore and make inferences about the past and learn about what the ancient Greeks achieved and how they impacted our lives today. We will also find out about daily life during this period in history.

In Geography we will locate where Greece is on a world map and which continent it is in. We will find out what the capital of Greece is and locate the cities of Athens and Sparta and see how the geography of these places affected the populations. 

In Art and Design Technology we will Link DT to Science and create working sun dials and learn about the skill of weaving and practise this using different materials. We will design an ancient Greek sandal and use cutting and weaving skills to create a final piece.
